Painter, illustrator, and teacher. Irizarry studied under Ponce artists Horacio Castaing, Librado Net, and Miguel Pou. He was drafted into the US army and deployed to Austria and France. Later, from 1950 to 1953, he studied at the Art Students League in New York under such teachers as Reginald Marsh and Robert Brackman. On his return to Puerto Rico he joined the Graphic Arts Workshop of DIVEDCO, where he worked as an illustrator until 1963. He later returned to Ponce to devote his full time to painting and teaching art. He was recipient of an award from the American International Academy and a grant from the Guggenheim Foundation. His work deals with local-color subjects, especially landscapes and scenes from island folklore. Inspired by his native Ponce, Irizarry often painted the Ponce Carnival, the landscape of the south coast, and figures dancing the bomba and plena. His work is characterized by the sobriety of its colors and its loose, expressive brushwork. -via MAPR
