Zilia Sánchez

Zilia Sánchez (1934) is a painter, sculptor, graphic artist, and professor. She studied at the San Alejandro National School of Fine Arts in Havana, Cuba in 1957. She then left Cuba and lived throughout Spain, Italy, Canada, and New York. She continued her studies in artwork restoration at the Herber Feist workshop in New York and the Madrid Central Institute of Conservation and Restoration. She also studied engraving at the Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.

During the 1970s, she painted murals on the façades of several residential buildings in Puerto Rico. She is a faculty member at the San Juan League of Art Students and has also been a professor at the School of Plastic Arts. She has received awards and important distinctions, such as First Prize in Painting at the IV UNESCO Painting Salon in San Juan in 1978, and the Acquisition Prize from the IV Medellín Biennial at the La Tertulia Museum in Colombia in 1980, among others. She has also been awarded the Cintas Foundation scholarship twice and has participated in international events such as the São Paulo Biennial. Source: Reyes-Veray Collection
